Why 25 minutes
Twenty-five minutes is the length of one Pomodoro, the work block in the Pomodoro Technique, which Francesco Cirillo developed as a university student in the late 1980s. It's short enough that starting feels easy, and long enough to finish a real piece of work.
Want the whole cycle, with breaks and a longer rest? The Pomodoro timer runs it for you.
A 25 minute timer with background sound
If you came here for a 25 minute timer with music, try the Background sound picker under the timer. It offers Rain, Waves and Deep, three steady sounds with no words or tune to pull your attention. They play only while the timer runs, and they're off until you choose one.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as a Pomodoro?
One Pomodoro is 25 minutes of focus. This page runs a single block and stops. The Pomodoro timer page runs the full cycle with breaks.
Does it play music?
It plays background sound rather than music: Rain, Waves or Deep. Choose one under the timer, or leave it Off.
What should I do when it chimes?
Stop and take a short break, about five minutes, before you start again. Stand up and look away from the screen.
